Biodiesel plant controversy continues

The President of the Alicante Port Authority, Mario Flores, admitted on Thursday that the plan to install a bio diesel plant at the port is generating a great deal of controversy, which he said he puts down to ‘hidden political and business interests.’

Flores reiterated that the plant is environmentally sound: he said it will not produce any smoke, gases, or smells, and poses no danger to the public.

Some 4,000 people demonstrated on Friday against installing the plant at the port, and say they hope to send a petition of 100,000 signatures to Brussels.

Population of La Villajoyosa set to multiply by six

The Partido Popular Mayor of La Vila Joiosa, in Alicante, has given his support to a new general plan for the town which will see 34,000 new homes and a multiplication of the local population by six.

16 million square metres of land is to be reclassified as suitable for development.

Mayor of the town, José Miguel Llorca Senabre, said in the planning meeting that ‘All the towns around us are gaining and everyone is getting rich. We cannot remain here and do nothing’.

Land sale completion eases pressure at cash-strapped theme park

There was a palpable sigh of relief last night inside the offices of the Terra Mitica theme park in Benidorm after Enrique Ortiz appeared at a Notary's office with a cheque for 85 million euros, that corresponded to the price his company had agreed to pay for the land adjacent to the complex, and which would allow it to step away from bankruptcy.

The negotiations had been fraught with anxiety ever since Mr Ortiz's company, after signing an agreement to pay the money on September 15, let the date slip by with no comment.

The payment registered yesterday will now enable the theme park to throw off the mantle of bankruptcy that has been hovering over it for the last two years.

Now, the Ortiz Company will begin construction on an hotel and tourist apartments on the 139,000 square metre plot of land.
